What this service is, and who it is for

What automated curtains are

An automated curtain is a bespoke curtain hung on an electric track. A motor at the end of the track draws the curtains open and closed, so the fabric is never pulled by hand and the leading edges stay clean and evenly dressed.

The curtain itself is made exactly as any of our curtains would be: fabric, heading, fullness, lining and interlining chosen for the room. Automation adds the track, the motor, the power route and the control, and those are specified at the same time as the fabric.

Who it is for

Homes with tall or wide windows, heavy interlined curtains, bay windows, bi-fold and sliding doors, cinema rooms and principal bedrooms, and anyone who wants curtains to close on a schedule or with a single command.

It also suits clients with limited mobility, and houses where curtains are rarely drawn because reaching them is awkward. Automation means they are used every day, which also protects furniture and flooring from sun damage.

Experience you can rely on

Katherine Adey has many years of experience supplying motorised blinds and curtains, from a single motorised track to a full house-wide integrated system. Past work includes a fully automated scheme using Lutron and Control4 on a Silent Gliss track, and wave-pleated blackout chenille curtains on an electric wave track controlled by remote or phone app with scheduling.

What it costs you to leave it

Undersized motors

Heavy interlined curtains on a motor not rated for the weight run slowly, strain and fail early.

No power planned

Leaving automation until after decorating can mean visible cables or making good to walls.

Separate controls

Curtains bought apart from the lighting system often end up on their own remote instead of one control.

How the work runs

  1. Step 1

    Consultation

We visit, look at each window, discuss how you use the room and bring fabrics to view in your own light.

  2. Step 2

    Specification

Fabric, heading, track, motor, control and power route are set out in writing per window, with a price.

  3. Step 3

    Coordination

Where a wired supply or home automation is involved, we coordinate with your electrician or integrator.

  4. Step 4

    Making

Curtains are made to the agreed specification by the experienced professional workrooms we work with.

  5. Step 5

    Installation and handover

Tracks and motors are fitted, limits set, curtains dressed, and you are shown how to use the controls and schedules.

What you get from it

Effortless every day

Open or close every curtain in a room, or the whole house, with one command.

Scheduled and smart

Curtains can close at sunset or before the afternoon sun, whether or not you are at home.

Fabric stays perfect

No hands on the leading edge means headings and pleats stay crisp for longer.

Integrated systems

Experienced with systems such as Lutron and Control4, so curtains can sit alongside lighting and blinds.

Materials, methods and variations

Wave and pinch-pleat headings on electric tracks

Wave headings suit electric tracks particularly well, giving even, flowing folds when open and closed. Pinch and double-pleat headings can also be motorised for a more traditional look.

The track is chosen for the span and curtain weight, including bends for bay windows and ceiling fixing where the wall above the window is unsuitable.

Wired or battery motors

Wired motors are best for heavy curtains, high windows and scheduled operation, and are ideal during a renovation. Battery motors avoid cable runs in finished rooms where curtains are lighter and easily reached for charging.

Questions we are asked

What do automated curtains cost?

It depends on the track length, motor, fabric and control system. Price ranges have not been supplied for publication, so each window is quoted in writing after the consultation.

Can my existing curtains be motorised?

Sometimes, depending on the heading and weight. We will look at them at the consultation and advise honestly.

Will they work with my home automation system?

We have supplied schemes using Lutron and Control4. Compatibility depends on the motor range, which we confirm in writing at specification.

Do I need an electrician?

Only for wired motors. We confirm the position and type of supply needed and coordinate with your electrician.

Can curtains close automatically at night?

Yes. Schedules can be set by time, and many systems can follow sunrise and sunset.

Which areas do you cover?

We work across north and central London, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, from Kensington, Chelsea and Marylebone to Hampstead, Pinner, Rickmansworth and Gerrards Cross.
