A full-height interlined curtain on a Belgravia principal floor can be several times the weight of a suburban equivalent. Ordinary poles deflect under that load across a wide opening, and brackets fixed into plaster rather than structure will eventually pull away, usually taking a section of finish with them.

So the hardware is calculated: track or pole rated for the finished weight, intermediate support on long spans, and fixings taken into masonry or timber established during the survey. Where the wall above the opening cannot be trusted, a ceiling-fixed system or a pelmet board spreads the load safely.

Height changes the making too. Fullness that looks generous on a two-metre drop can read sparse at four metres, and heading depth is scaled to the drop so the pleats hold their shape all the way down rather than collapsing halfway.

Elaborate cornices and deep architraves are part of what these rooms are, and they must not be drilled into or crowded. That frequently leaves too little clean wall between the window head and the cornice for a bracket to sit properly.

The usual solution is a ceiling-fixed track, concealed behind a fabric-covered pelmet or a painted fascia. It gains apparent height, keeps the heading dead level and leaves the plasterwork untouched. On listed properties this also avoids alterations that would not be acceptable.

Reveals complicate blinds in the same way. Where shutter boxes or deep joinery consume the recess, a Roman blind is fitted outside and above the opening, which keeps the fold stack clear of the glass and avoids trimming a blind down to a width that gaps at the sides.

Ground-floor rooms facing the street need daytime privacy without giving up light, so voiles or an unlined blind behind curtains is the standard answer. It also softens the view of railings and pavement without shutting the room off.

Managed estates and freeholders frequently set rules about what is visible from outside, most often the colour of linings seen from the street. We confirm those requirements before ordering, since a lining changed after making is an avoidable cost.

Access is a genuine constraint here. Lift dimensions, stair widths, porter arrangements, restricted loading windows and pedestrianised sections all affect how very long curtains reach the room. Those details are agreed when the fitting is scheduled, not discovered on the day.
