Original working shutters fold back into the reveal, and a curtain fitted without allowing for that will stop them opening, or the shutters will crease the leading edge of the fabric every time they are used. It is one of the most common faults we are asked to correct in Chelsea houses.

The remedy is a fitting position and return depth calculated with the shutters in mind: the pole or track projected far enough forward, and the stack placed clear of the folded shutter leaves. Where space genuinely will not allow both, the honest recommendation is either dress curtains that are never drawn or a blind above the opening instead.

The upside of keeping shutters in service is significant. They already deliver blackout, security and thermal benefit, so the fabric can be chosen for how the room looks rather than being loaded with functions it does not need to perform.

In a Chelsea terrace the same window type repeats up the house, but the requirement changes on every floor. A first-floor drawing room wants full-length interlined curtains that read formally; a second-floor bedroom wants blackout that actually blocks a summer morning; a top-floor study wants glare control while working.

Treating them identically produces a house that either looks inconsistent in function or performs badly in half its rooms. We set a common fabric family and hardware finish for coherence, then vary the treatment, lining and heading per floor, recorded window by window.

Lower-ground rooms are the exception that proves the rule. With limited light and often a light-well outlook, heavy treatments make them cave-like. Slimmer hardware, lighter fabrics and blinds mounted high recover both light and apparent ceiling height.

Ground and lower-ground windows sit close to pavement level, so privacy is a daily requirement rather than a night-time one. Voiles, or an unlined blind behind curtains, hold privacy through the day while keeping the daylight the room depends on.

Riverside and south-facing rooms have the opposite problem: strong, reflected light that fades fabric faster than the room's owners expect, concentrated on one edge. Lining weight and light-fastness are specified for that exposure, and delicate fabrics are steered to darker windows.

Central London air also leaves its mark. Windows opened onto a busy street soil the leading edge of pale fabrics faster than in a suburban house, so we advise on cleanability at selection and provide fabric-specific care instructions: specialist dry cleaning for anything lined or interlined, never washing.
